Overview

The pain management and opioid drug crisis presents challenges to many health care professionals. This introductory lecture will deliver valuable information for medical staff. *Open to Beaumont Providers/Staff Only.*

Objectives

As a result of this activity, learners should be better able to:

Self- report knowledge and understanding of State and Federal laws regarding prescribing and dispensing controlled substances, how to counsel patients on effects and risks associated with using Opioids and other controlled substances and the stigma of addiction.


  1. Discuss the use of opioids and other controlled substances and the stigma of addiction.
  2. Review state and federal laws regarding prescribing and dispensing controlled substances and review how to utilize the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS).
  3. Discuss how to counsel patients on the effects and risks associated with using opioids and other controlled substances.
  4. Review integration of treatments, alternative treatments for pain management, and security features and proper disposal requirements for prescriptions.
