Objectives

As a result of this activity, learners should be better able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of how coordination of care and a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain management in the ED onward reduces ED use, hospital utilization and improves outcomes. 


  1. Review the impact of chronic pain on the Emergency Department (ED).
  2. Discuss why chronic pain patients visit the ED and identify contributing factors.
  3. Identify the complex difficulties with treating chronic pain in the ED.
  4. Discuss strategies for applying an interdisciplinary approach to treating chronic pain, beginning in the ED through admission and discharge.
  5. Review how coordination of care and a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain from the ED onward reduces ED use, hospital utilization and improves outcomes. Q55..
