Overview
The traditional leadership paradigm in academic medicine is hierarchical in structure, positional in nature, and stresses independent executive leadership. Exercising leadership relief relies on the chain of command and assignment of tasks to subordinates. An unfortunate consequence of the model was unintentionally shutting down the intelligence of others rather than “harvesting the genius” of everyone comprising the organization. As our organizations are loosely coupled complex adaptive systems, a paradigm shift in leadership behavior is required for success in the current environment of academic medicine and science. This workshop helps leaders to adopt a new leadership paradigm that places less emphasis on hierarchy, greater emphasis on relationships, and promotes workplace interdependence. Participants will learn to create positive workplace changes that lead to improved organizational performance.
Objectives
  1. Describe the paradigm shift in leadership behavior required for success in the current environment of academic medicine and science.
  2. Develop new leadership competencies for tapping into the knowledge of others by moving away from current leadership practices that unintentionally shut down the intelligence of others.
  3. Recognize the value of prompting positive workplace interdependence.
  4. Apply positive workplace changes that lead to improved organizational performance.
