Overview

This module will provide content regarding the opioid epidemic, alternatives to opioids for pain management, state and federal laws regarding prescribing and dispensing controlled substances, harm reduction techniques when prescribing opioids, and more.

Objectives
  1. Discuss the opioid epidemic and how providers can help.
  2. Describe alternatives to opioids for pain management.
  3. Recognize the importance of treatment integration in your practice.
  4. Utilize risk management tools prior to prescribing controlled substances.
  5. Utilize proper prescribing and monitoring techniques for controlled substances.
  6. Identify state and federal laws regarding prescribing and dispensing controlled substances.
  7. Recognize and begin to dismantle addiction stigma.
  8. Utilize harm reduction techniques when prescribing opioids.

Credit Information

In support of improving patient care, Beaumont Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Medicine CME: Beaumont Health designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

Nursing CE: Beaumont Health designates this activity for a maximum of 1.0 ANCC contact hour.  Nurses should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Pharmacy CE: Beaumont Health designates this activity for 1.0 ACPE contact hour. ACPE Universal Activity Number (UAN): JA4008259-0000-22-092-H08-P; JA4008259-0000-22-092-H08-T.  Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Credit will be uploaded to the NABP CPE Monitor within 60 days after the activity completion.  Per ACPE rules, Beaumont Health does not have access nor the ability to upload credits requested after the evaluation closes.  It is the responsibility of the individual to provide the correct information (NABP ID and DOB (MMDD) to receive credit.

Social Work CE:  As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Beaumont Health is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Beaumont Health maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 continuing education credit.

State of Michigan Specialty Topic: This module is eligible for 1.0 pain and symptom management: prescribing controlled substances credit towards the State of Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) CE requirement.

COMPLETION INSTRUCTIONS

Corewell Health Employees: Register and then click Launch.  On the next login screen click AUTHENTICATE.  If you are already logged into a Corewell Health computer using your Corewell Health network login, you will automatically be logged into the video system.  If you are at home or another off-site location, you will be prompted to authenticate in PING.

Non-Corewell Health (External) Providers: Register and then click Launch.  On the next login screen enter your first name, last name, and email address where prompted.

All Participants: Upon completion of the video, return to Begin Activity and click Attestation to complete a brief attestation and evaluation to receive credit.
