Overview

This lecture series is for Beaumont employees and providers only.

This first portion of this session will give a general overview of elder abuse, including the signs and symptoms, risk factors, and aging changes that make older adults vulnerable to abuse. It will also discuss how to take a trauma informed approach to care, as well as how to screen and report abuse.  The second half of the session will cover the definitions of vulnerable adult, abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of vulnerable adults under Michigan law.  It will also cover the warning signs of financial exploitation and the parasitic living arrangements that lead to financial exploitation.


Target Audience
Professions - Nurse/APRN, Physician, Social Worker

Objectives
  1. Identify types of abuse as well as signs and symptoms of each type
  2. Discuss risk factors for elder abuse
  3. Review proper screening and reporting strategies
  4. Define vulnerable adult
  5. Define abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation
  6. Discuss warning signs of financial exploitation

Social Work CE: As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Beaumont Health is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Beaumont Health maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 continuing education credit.
