Overview

This intermediate lecture will ensure a foundational understanding of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the ramifications they have on both psychological and physical health, as well as morbidity in adulthood. An overview of the ways in which individuals who have suffered trauma experience and interact with the healthcare setting will be explored. Followed by an introduction to Trauma Informed Care (TIC), specifically as it relates to healthcare settings including a conceptional and organizational framework in order to better understand the ways both healthcare professionals and the health system systems in which they work can make small but meaningful steps toward becoming more trauma aware and eventually trauma informed.

This lecture is available to Beaumont Health/OUWB providers ONLY.

Objectives
  1. Describe the ACEs study and list several health consequences of childhood stressors and trauma.
  2. List the key elements of the Trauma Informed Care pyramid to demonstrate conceptional understanding.
  3. Apply several strategies from the specific-trauma interventions and to their individual work with patients who have a trauma history.
  4. Identify strategies for promoting Trauma-Informed Care in one's work within a healthcare setting that are based on universal trauma precautions.

Psychology CE: Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibly for the content of the programs.

 

Social Work CE: As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Beaumont Health is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Beaumont Health maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 continuing education credit.
