Overview

This intermediate lecture will ensure a foundational understanding of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the ramifications they have on both psychological and physical health, as well as morbidity in adulthood. An overview of the ways in which individuals who have suffered trauma experience and interact with the healthcare setting will be explored. Followed by an introduction to Trauma Informed Care (TIC), specifically as it relates to healthcare settings including a conceptional and organizational framework in order to better understand the ways both healthcare professionals and the health system systems in which they work can make small but meaningful steps toward becoming more trauma aware and eventually trauma informed.

This lecture is available to Beaumont Health/OUWB providers ONLY.

Target Audience
Professions - Nurse/APRN, Physician, Physician Assistant, Psychologist, Social Worker

Objectives
  1. Describe the ACEs study and list several health consequences of childhood stressors and trauma.
  2. List the key elements of the Trauma Informed Care pyramid to demonstrate conceptional understanding.
  3. Apply several strategies from the specific-trauma interventions and to their individual work with patients who have a trauma history.
  4. Identify strategies for promoting Trauma-Informed Care in one's work within a healthcare setting that are based on universal trauma precautions.
