Overview

The Beaumont Intraosseous Access Workshop is an in-person course designed to teach Beaumont clinicians how to insert intraosseous lines in simulated bones. The course includes a review of the indications, precautions and contraindications for intraosseous line insertion and the techniques for site selection, insertion, maintenance and removal of the intraosseous line. A skills workshop will allow hands-on practice of the the techniques related to IO access.

This workshop is restricted to Beaumont employees only.

Workshop Schedule [each workshop is 3 hours]

  • Welcome, Introductions (15 minutes)
  • Overview and Key Concepts - Intraosseous Access (15 minutes)
  • Intraosseous Access: Indications and Precautions, Contraindications, Site Identification and Selection, Insertion Technique, Pain Management, Variations - Adult and Pediatric Population, Maintenance of IO Access and Site Care, Documentation of Procedure, Removal Procedure, Potential Complications Related to IO Access (60 minutes)
  • Break (15 minutes)
  • Skills Session - Demonstration: Site Selection, Insertion Procedure including Pain Management, Intraosseous Access Removal (65 minutes)
  • Summary - Procedure, Policy, Ongoing Skills Validation, Evaluation (10 minutes)

Target Audience
Professions - Advanced Practice Nurse NP CRNA CNM CNS, Nurse, Physician, Physician Assistant


Objectives
  1. Define the indications, precautions and contraindications for intraosseous access insertion.
  2. Define the procedure for intraosseous site selection, insertion, flushing, maintenance, and removal.
  3. Demonstrate the procedure for intraosseous site selection, insertion, maintenance and removal.

AMA PRA Category 1 Creditsâ„¢ (2.50 hours), AMA PRA Non-Physician (Attendance) (2.50 hours), IPCE (2.50 hours), Nursing CE (ANCC) (2.50 hours)
