Overview

The pain management and opioid drug crisis presents challenges to many health care professionals. This 1.5 hour module will focus on pre-operative screening and education for patients undergoing surgery.  The module will discuss tools to allow providers to identify patients at risk for prolonged recovery or increased opioid utilization after surgery.  It will discuss multimodal pain management techniques available to patients in pain and give guidance about safer opioid prescribing.

This module provides 1.5 credits towards the State of Michigan LARA requirement for education on pain and symptom management.

This module is available to Beaumont Health providers and staff only.

Objectives

Outcome Statement: 

At the conclusion of the program, participants will have the awareness and knowledge of safe opioid prescribing habits and of a stepwise approach in the formulation of a multimodal analgesic treatment plan.


  1. Describe preoperative screening to better predict patients at risk (for prolonged recovery, for opioid use disorder).
  2. Identify non-pharmacologic, non-opioid pharmacologic, and opioid based treatment methods for pain management.
  3. Discuss safer opioid prescribing habits and apply a stepwise approach in the formulation of a multimodal analgesic treatment plan.

Medicine CME: Beaumont Health designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nursing CE: Beaumont Health designates this activity for a maximum of 1.5 ANCC contact hour(s).  Nurses should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Credit will be uploaded to the NABP CPE Monitor within 60 days after the activity completion.  Per ACPE rules, Beaumont Health does not have access nor the ability to upload credits requested after 60 days.  It is the responsibility of the pharmacist or pharmacy technician to provide the correct NABP ID and DOB in order to receive credit.

Social Workers:  As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Beaumont Health is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Beaumont Health maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 continuing education credits.

Other Health Care Professionals: Other health care professionals participating in this course will be provided with a certificate of completion for 1.5 credits.
