Overview

There is growing research evidence for the effectiveness of nonpharmacological pain management strategies. The effectiveness has been demonstrated at the neuropsychological, neurophysiological and phenomenological levels of impact. Building nonpharmacolgical strategies in a seamless way into the workflow of caring for patients experiencing pain in the hospital and ambulatory settings is a challenge facing the healthcare field. Gaps in delivery abound. 

This online module provides succinct guidelines and action steps for the translation of these strategies into the time-sensitive workflow. All members of the team can benefit from participating.

This module provides 1.5 credits towards the State of Michigan LARA requirement for education on pain and symptom management.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the program, participants will have the knowledge to develop a multimodal pain management plan that includes Spiritual Care specialists and credentialed practitioners that utilize non-pharmacological interventions such as music therapy, yoga, acupuncture, nutrition and massage.


  1. Clarify Key Terminology & Concepts of Spiritual Care.
  2. Review Evidence Supporting Spiritual Care.
  3. Recognize Spiritual Needs & Distress.
  4. Collaborate more effectively with Chaplains – The Spiritual Care Specialists.
  5. Explain how music therapy impacts non-pharmacological pain management in healthcare.
  6. Explain how yoga therapy based breathing and meditation techniques are able to help with non-pharm pain management.
  7. Identify at least two yoga therapy techniques for patient self-management skills that have been shown to non-pharmacologically help offset the multi-leveled aspects of pain and discomfort.
  8. Explain the Integrative approach to Pain Management.
  9. Articulate the evidence to support various modalities utilized to address pain, including nutrition, acupuncture, massage.
  10. Recall how to make appropriate referrals to credentialed practitioners.

Medicine CME: Beaumont Health designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
