Overview

The pain management and opioid drug crisis presents challenges to many health care professionals. This 1.5 hour module will deliver valuable information related to use of opioids and other controlled substances, integration of treatments, alternative treatments for pain management, counseling patients on the effects and risks associated with using opioids and other controlled substances, the stigma of addiction, utilizing the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS), state and federal laws regarding prescribing and dispensing controlled substances, and security features and proper disposal requirements for prescriptions.

This module meets the State of Michigan requirement for awareness training for prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances and provides 1.5 credits in pain and symptom management.

Objectives

As a result of this activity, learners should be better able to:

Self- report knowledge and understanding of State and Federal laws regarding prescribing and dispensing controlled substances, how to counsel patients on effects and risks associated with using Opioids and other controlled substances and the stigma of addiction.


  1. Discuss the use of opioids and other controlled substances and the stigma of addiction.
  2. Review state and federal laws regarding prescribing and dispensing controlled substances and review how to utilize the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS).
  3. Discuss how to counsel patients on the effects and risks associated with using opioids and other controlled substances.
  4. Review integration of treatments, alternative treatments for pain management, and security features and proper disposal requirements for prescriptions.

Instructions for Completion

  1. Click on the REGISTER tab
  2. Complete the registration and enter payment information (for non-Beaumont providers)
  3. Return to the module website (a direct link is provided in the registration confirmation email)
  4. Click on the Begin Activity tab and then click Launch Video
  5. Beaumont Health Employees and Affiliated Providers: Click Authenticate (if you are already logged into a Beaumont computer using your Beaumont network login, you will be automatically logged into the video system.  If you are at home or another off-site location, you must enter your Beaumont network login (what you use to access Beaumont's email and/or Epic system).
  6. Non-Beaumont (External) Providers: Enter your first name, last name, and email address where prompted
  7. Upon completion of the video, return to Begin Activity and click Attestation to complete a brief attestation and evaluation to receive credit.

Medicine CME: Beaumont Health designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nursing CE: Beaumont Health designates this activity for a maximum of 1.5 ANCC contact hours.  Nurses should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Credit will be uploaded to the NABP CPE Monitor within 60 days after activity completion.  Per ACPE rules, Beaumont Health does not have access nor the ability to upload credits requested after the evaluation closes.  It is the responsibility of the pharmacist or pharmacy technician to provide the correct NABP ID and DOB in order to receive credit.

Social Work CE: As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Beaumont Health is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Beaumont Health maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 continuing education credits. 

This activity meets the State of Michigan CE licensing requirement on pain and symptom management and training on controlled substances.
