Overview

Anxiety and depression have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Equiping prescribers with updated knowledge on medication treatments they have available to them will improve treatment of these conditions in patients.  This intermediate lecture will provide a brief overview of common anxiety and depressive disorders seen in various medical settings, will discuss an evidence based approach to treatment for these disorders, will review medications commonly used to treat these disorders, and will provide an update on medications relatively newer to the market that can be considered for use as well.

Beaumont Health Employees and Affiliated Providers: Click AUTHENTICATE.  If you are already logged into a Beaumont computer using your Beaumont network login, you will automatically be logged into the video system.  If you are at home or another off-site location, you must enter your Beaumont network login (what you use to access Beaumont email, HealthStream, Epic).

Non-Beaumont (External) Providers: Enter your first name, last name, and email address where prompted.

Upon completion of the video, return to Begin Activity and click Attestation to complete a brief attestation and evaluation to receive credit.



Objectives
  1. Summarize first-line medication treatments for anxiety and depression
  2. Discuss newer medications used to treat anxiety and depression
  3. Choose a medication treatment for anxiety and/or depression given a clinical scenario
  4. Explain to patients and colleagues why sedatives (e.g. benzodiazepines) are suboptimal treatment for anxiety disorders

Credit Information

In support of improving patient care, Beaumont Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. 

Medicine CME: Beaumont Health designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nursing CE: This activity is approved for 1.0 continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hour.

Pharmacy CE: Beaumont Health designates this activity for 1.0 ACPE contact hour(s). 
ACPE Universal Activity Number (UAN): JA4008259-0000-20-010-H01-P.  Pharmacists should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Credit will be uploaded to the NABP CPE Monitor within 60 days after the activity completion.  Per ACPE rules, Beaumont Health does not have access nor the ability to upload credits requested after the evaluation closes.  It is the responsibility of the pharmacist to provide the correct information (NABP ID and DOB (MMDD) in order to receive credit.
