Overview

Doulas represent an evidence based strategy to promote person centered care and to improving health outcomes, including reductions in cesareans.  They have also been noted as a critical partner in addressing equity and closing the gap in health disparities. The focus of this presentation will be an update on the status of Doulas in Michigan as members of the maternity care team. The evidence base, scope of practice, roles and responsibilities will be discussed. We will also highlight new information on where Doulas are located, access to their services, reimbursement and range of services provided gathered from Doulas throughout the state of Michigan.

Objectives
  1. Identify models of Doula care, locations of Doulas and opportunities to access Doulas for the families hospitals serve.
  2. Discuss opportunities to integrate Doulas into the pregnancy and maternity care team to support person-centered care.
  3. Describe the evidence base supporting the role of Doulas as a positive strategy to improve maternity care outcomes.
