This module is intended to assist in providing improved comfort in the diagnosis of mental health in the setting of substance use disorder and empower prescribers to understand the needs of the patients experiencing co-occurring disease.

Objectives
  1. Define ‘dual diagnosis’ and ‘co-occurring disorders’ and explain the importance of identifying and treating them.
  2. Identify the prevalence of dual diagnosis conditions and list some associated mental health disorders commonly found with substance use disorders.
  3. Describe how a mental health disorder can be a risk factor for developing a substance use disorder and vice versa.
  4. Explain the challenges of making a mental health diagnosis in someone with an active substance use disorder and cite some strategies that can be utilized to make it easier.
  5. Identify some potential sequelae of substance use disorders which may require further mental health treatment.
  6. Cite some important clinical practice considerations when treating dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders.

Credit Information

In support of improving patient care, Beaumont Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

 

Medicine CME: Beaumont Health designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

Nursing CE: Beaumont Health designates this activity for a maximum of 1.0 ANCC contact hours.  Nurses should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Pharmacy CE: Beaumont Health designates this activity for 1.0 ACPE contact hours. ACPE Universal Activity Number (UAN): JA4008259-0000-23-117-H08-P; JA4008259-0000-23-117-H08-T.  Learners should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Credit will be uploaded to the NABP CPE Monitor within 30 days after activity completion.  Per ACPE rules, Beaumont Health does not have access nor the ability to upload credits requested after 60 days.  It is the individual learner’s responsibility to provide the correct NABP ID and DOB (MMDD) to receive credit.

Psychology CE: Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibly for the content of the programs. 

 

Social Work CE:  As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Beaumont Health is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 continuing education credits.

State of Michigan LARA: This module provides 1.0 hour of pain and symptom management credit.

Drug Enforcement Administration: This module provides 1.0 hour of training for Medication Assisted Treatment as part of the DEA MATE Act.

Instructions for Completion


1.  Register.  You must be logged in as an employee through the "Sign in with your Beaumont Health ID" option.  After registering, click on the module link at the bottom of the receipt window to return to the module Overview screen. 

2. Click on Begin Activity

3. Click Launch Video and click AUTHENTICATE where prompted.  If you are not already logged into a Corewell Health device, you will be prompted to authenticate in PING to access.

4. View the video in its entirety.  When finished, close the video widow and click on Attestation.  Once all questions have been answered, click on FINISH TEST.

5. Click on Complete Evaluation, submit and receive credit.

If you are not automatically redirected to the evaluation after completing the attestation, click on the yellow My CME button, then Evaluations & Certificates to complete the evaluation and claim credit for this module.  If the evaluation is not visible to complete, email [email protected] for assistance.
