Date & Location
Thursday, April 6, 2023, 12:00 AM - Monday, April 6, 2026, 12:00 AM

Overview

Patients from underrepresented groups in the United States can experience the effects of unintentional cognitive (unconscious) biases that derive from cultural stereotypes in ways that perpetuate health inequities. Unconscious bias can also affect healthcare professionals in many ways, including patient-clinician interactions, hiring and promotion, and their own interprofessional interactions. Providers need to understand how implicit biases and stereotypes are formed and know how to address and prevent bias and microaggressions that occur in the healthcare environment.

Release Date: April 6, 2023
Expiration Date: April 5, 2026
Estimated Time to Complete: 1 hour

Objectives
  1. Define implicit bias, microaggression, and stereotypes.
  2. Describe how implicit biases and stereotypes are formed and the ways in which they impact everyday life experiences.
  3. Examine your own biases and their effects on yourself and others.
  4. Discuss strategies to mitigate unconscious bias.
  5. Review mitigation strategies for addressing bias and microaggressions that occur in the healthcare environment.
