Self-Directed Learning: Encouraging an Attitude of Life Long Discovery

Self-directed learning is an individual level process that is crucial for medical learners, particularly medical students, residents, and fellows, to better comprehend, apply, and master medical education concepts for lifelong learning. This session will provide an overview of self-directed learning and how clinical faculty can encourage their students, residents, and fellows to incorporate it into their medical education learning process.

1. Define self-directed learning and distinguish from directed learning
2. Recognize teaching behaviors that promote self-directed learning
3. Identify resources to aid in promoting self-directed learning
